The Flat Stanley Project, started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, was meant to facilitate letter-writing by schoolchildren as they document where the character Flat Stanley has gone with them.

In order to take full advantage of modern methods of communication, the successful pen and paper project had to make its way into the digital world. I had the pleasure to help make that happen by designing the new website and accompanying iPhone application. In coming up with the art direction for this newest of Flat Stanley’s endeavors I have also re-drawn and re-designed the beloved character together with an entire cast of companions.

Apart from creating visuals that children can easily relate to, a very important aspect of this project was to make sure its interface, whether on the computer or mobile device, is usable and friendly enough for its youngest audience. The project’s success proves that great ideas work well regardless of their implementation medium.
